She asked me if I could help her bring it back to life and of course I was up for the challenge!<\/h5>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Client Request &amp; Inspiration: &nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h5>&#8211; Black painted base<\/h5>\n<h5>&#8211; light semi-transparent stain (she really wanted to be able to see the wood grain)<\/h5>\n<h5>&#8211; Replacement of Metal decorative nails that were missing<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Just from the pictures provided of the table- all of her requests appeared to be doable. Once I had wiped off all of the build up from the oven cleaner- I set up my shop fan to help with the drying process.\u00a0<\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95b3382 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"95b3382\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bb84cd5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bb84cd5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Step 3: Sanding<\/h3><h5>2 hours of sanding later &amp; I was finally able to get a good look at the condition of the wood I was working with &amp; what I found was going to create some challenges.<\/h5><p><strong>PROBLEM 1:\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #444444; font-family: inherit; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 1px; text-align: var(--text-align);\">It appeared that a <\/span><span style=\"color: #444444; font-family: inherit; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 1px; text-align: var(--text-align); text-decoration-line: underline;\"><em><strong>non-stainable wood filler was used<\/strong><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444; font-family: inherit; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 1px; text-align: var(--text-align);\"> to make some repairs at some point\u2026In order to accomplish the light stain request- I was going to have to get creative\u2026<\/span><\/p><h5>I grabbed a couple pieces of scrap wood &amp; Repair<\/h3><h5>After exploring multiple options with no luck, I ended up deciding to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>cut out the wood-filled<\/strong><\/em><\/span> areas so that I could <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>repair with a stainable product<\/strong><\/em><\/span>. \u00a0I used an <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3wNK0KM\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>exacto knife<\/strong> <\/em><\/span><\/a>to carefully cut &amp; chip away at all the areas where this non-stainable wood filler was present..<\/h5><div><h5>I then finished my sanding of the wood top by going from <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong><em>40grit<\/em><\/strong><\/span> moving all the way gradually changing grits to a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3v28bEA\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">220grit<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u2026 This process took approx. 7 total hours to complete\u2026 I was removing several layers of stain that were previously applied to this wood\u2026<\/h5><h5>To repair the areas that I cut out- I used a custom <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3T9BmNW\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">tintable wood filler<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a> by DAP using a separate container to mix the compound with the stain mixture I planned to use.. because I there was no way of knowing what the exact color would look like once I applied it to the table until I actually applied it\u2026 I decided to make the filler color a little darker than I planned to stain the table- A color that would match closer to the natural darker grain in the wood\u2026 My hope was that I could mask the large gap as a natural part of the wood grain rather than trying to make it a part of the end stain color\u2026<\/h5><div><h5><strong>Once the filler was dry<\/strong>&#8211; I applied my<span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong><a style=\"color: #008080;\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49JYNEI\"> wood conditioner<\/a> <\/strong><\/em><\/span>with a clean old sock. I then scuffed the metal with a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/438Rtjx\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>general purpose sanding pad<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> &amp; cleaned with some<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3TosCFa\"> <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>laquer thinner<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> and a rag. I then took my<span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong> <a style=\"color: #008080;\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4c2xsPJ\">Matte finish spray<\/a> paint <\/strong><\/span>and applied multiple coats until I achieved full coverage. Once this was dry, I removed the plastic and was ready to start staining.<\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element style=\"color: #008080;\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4c7nWdU\"><em><strong>Early American<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/span>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4c1Jfh3\"><em><strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008080;\">Golden Pecan<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0to create a light stain that would have a dark enough tint to mask the uneven transitions of the wood that were joined together.<\/h5><h5>Once this stain was dry, I applied a second coat of the Minwax stain mixture\u2026.<\/h5><h5><em>I will be writing a post about applying wood stain in the future- so check back for that!<\/em>\u00a0<\/h5><h5><strong>PROBLEM 2<\/strong>: Unfortunately, due to the high concentration of sap that emerged during sanding, I needed to come up with a creative way to even out the color<\/h3><div><h5>Using what I had on hand, I mixed a 1:1 ratio of<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/435ZE02\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong> no pain gel stain<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> in the color (golden ash) with some <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a style=\"color: #008080;\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3wIeBJF\"><em><strong>clear glaze<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/span>&#8211; I then brushed this glaze mixture on using <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Vaji9i\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>coarse bristled brushes<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> in the same way you would to accomplish the<em><strong> \u201cfaux stained\u201d technique. <\/strong><\/em><\/h5><h5>This stain ended up doing exactly what I wanted to do &amp; evened out the color perfectly\u2026<\/h5><h5>This table.<\/h5><h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Let&#8217;s &#8220;paint it black&#8221; baby!\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/h4><div>\u00a0<\/div><h4><strong>Table Base Paint Steps:<\/strong><\/h4><ol><li><h5><strong>Light Scuffing<\/strong> with a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3T54NRu\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>sanding sponge<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/h5><\/li><li><h5><strong>Remove dust<\/strong> (I like to use a combination of cleaning techniques to ensure all of the dust is removed by using my <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3PcPEfw\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>mini shop blower<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> &amp; dusting with a clean pillow case or dry microfiber rag)<\/h5><\/li><li><h5><strong>Primer Application:<\/strong> Using my <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3v3hJ25\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong><em>Dixie Belle oval medium paint brush<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, I then applied 2 coats of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/48J6ZUq\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">BOSS grey primer<\/span><\/strong><\/em>.<\/a> I allowed each coat to dry completely, giving the base a light scuffing with my <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Iu7IhI\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>washable sanding sponge<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> between each application.<\/h5><\/li><li><h5><strong>Paint Application 1:<\/strong> I then used my <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3V2yMfn\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>paint sprayer<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/a> to apply my first coat of Dixie Belle Paint Company chalk mineral paint in the shade: <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3IpoSNg\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>Midnight Sky<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<\/a><\/h5><\/li><li><h5><strong>Scuffing &amp; Dusting:<\/strong> Once the paint was dry, I took my sanding sponge &amp; gave it a quick scuffing &amp; dusting.<\/h5><\/li><li><h5><strong>Paint Application 2:<\/strong> I then brushed my second coat of paint on with my<em><strong> oval medium brush<\/strong><\/em> &amp; allowed to dry.<\/h5><\/li><li><h5><strong>Top Coat Application:<\/strong> Using my <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3V2yMfn\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>paint sprayer<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/a> The entire piece was then sealed with 4 coats of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3T3FFKR\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong><em>General finishes semi-gloss top coat<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>. I let each application dry completely &amp; lightly sanded with <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/48EMCb3\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong><em>0000 grit steel wool<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> between each clear coat application. <em>This is going to allow you to achieve a uniform &amp; smooth clear coat finish.<\/em><\/h5><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ffb79a e-flex e-con-boxed e-con
