patina: An introduction

What is Patina?

Patina is a surface layer formed through oxidation (chemical reaction) that displays various colors and textures depending on the metal involved.

What can you use Patina on?

You can patina anything you want- wood, leather, fabric, plastic, metals, etc. The patina world is your oyster, let your creativity run wild.

can you paint over patina?

If you find that you want to paint a piece that has patina, you can! Start by giving the piece a light scuff or sand just like you would any other piece prior to painting over it.

Can you remove patina?

YES! To remove the patina from brass and bronze: Mix 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup vinegar and enough flour to make a paste. Rub onto the object. Rinse and dry.

Where can I buy patina products?

How to use Dixie Belle Paint Company Patina - Step by step instructions

Step by step instructions:

How to use dixie Belle Paint company patina products

Step 1: Clean the surface of your project.
Step 2: Set your project on top of a protected surface.
Protect your surface with cardboard, parchment paper, wax paper, newspaper or drop cloth.
Have paper towels nearby for quick clean up- this can be a messy project.
Step 3: Base Coat
  • If your project is anything other than metal:
    • Apply 1x coat of your favorite Dixie Belle paint color & let dry.
  • For Metal surfaces:
(Prime Start contains an acid blocker to stop the rust/patina from eating through the patina paint & degrading the metal.)
Step 4: Apply Patina paint (Copper, bronze, or iron)
  • Stir VERY well!!!
  • Using a chip brush, foam brush or sponge, apply a thin coat of patina paint,
  • Let your first coat dry, completely.
WARNING: Patina paint contains a significant amount of ground metal, which sinks to the bottom of the container- in order for this product to work as intended, you MUST stir!!
TIP: I use popsicle sticks in my shop for stirring.
Step 5: Apply second coat of patina paint & patina spray application
  • Shake Patina spray VERY WELL & set aside.
  • Apply second coat of patina paint & while it is still WET- apply patina spray over the wet patina paint.
You can mist or saturate the spray, depending on wether you want a light or heavy patina look.
NOTE: it can take 2-6 hours for full effect to take place.

Step 6: Optional Step
  • Once your project is completely dry, you can seal your piece. However, sealing of the Copper and Bronze patina is not necessary.
  • If you use the Iron (rust) patina- I recommend sealing to prevent any further color change as it can continue to rust further which will alter your appearance.
TIP: Sometimes the surface will have a “chalky” feel and some of the patina may rub off- to stop this, after everything is dry- you can wipe a DAMP rag over the surface and let air dry.
I would love to see your patina project before & after pictures! Please leave a comment or shoot me an email! thank you for stopping by and i am so glad you have joined the reconciliation furniture tribe.
