In this blog post, I want to talk about 10 simple tips to selecting furniture that will give you the most return. Whether you’re a seasoned flipper or just starting out, these 10 tips will have you identifying quality pieces like a boss. Lets talk about identifying and selecting furniture that will maximize your flipping profits.
Happy Flipping!

10 tips to selecting furniture that will maximize your profits

THE GOLDEN RULE:

SOLID WOOD: Don’t even waste your time on flipping anything other than wood furniture… Now, I shouldn’t say “solid wood” – I really should just say “WOOD” but that looked weird by itself. The point I am trying to make is that if you want to maximize your profits in this business-you want to stay away from furniture built with laminate, particle board and any fabricated materials I know this metaphor is over used but for the sake of getting this point across- it starts with the foundation. You cannot build a solid home on a falling foundation- eventually, the house will fall. The furniture we choose to flip is our foundation.
Now, lets talk about tips to help identify quality, wood furniture.

10 tips to identify quality built furniture to maxamize profits

  1. The Sniff Test: Give it a whiff, man! Solid wood has a distinct, earthy scent. If it smells like a forest, you’re on the right track. No forest vibes? Move along.
  2. Heavy Metal (Hardware, that is): Quality furniture flaunts metal hardware with substance. If it’s light and flimsy, it’s probably not made to last through your next DIY masterpiece.
  3. Dovetail Joints: The hippie handshake of furniture! Seek out dovetail joints; they’re like the love child of craftsmanship and durability. If the joints are tight and interlocking, you’ve hit the jackpot.
  4. Branding Stamps – Seek the Mark: Dive deep, my friend. Check inside drawers, on the back, or anywhere a sneaky furniture maker might leave their mark. Finding that stamp is like discovering the hidden treasure of the DIY universe. Just like anything else, nailing a recognizable brand name like Drexel, Bassett, Hooker, Lexington, Remington- will allow you to get top dollar upon listing. We are a world that falls in love with brand names.
  5. Shake It, Baby: Give it a gentle shake—nothing too crazy. If it wobbles like it’s ready for Woodstock, it might not be the sturdy companion you’re looking for.
  6. Examine the Grain: Get up close and personal with the wood grain. Solid wood boasts a consistent pattern, while veneer tends to look like a bad tie-dye experiment.
  7. Weight Matters: Channel your inner warrior strength and lift that piece. Solid wood is heavier than its particleboard counterpart. If it’s a lightweight, it might just be a DIY disappointment.
  8. Feel the Finish: Run your fingers along the surface. A quality piece will have a smooth, well-finished texture. Rough patches or swelling? It’s a sign to keep searching.
  9. Check the Edges: Feel the edges like a smooth-talking gypsy. Quality wood has rounded edges, not sharp corners. If it feels like a square, it’s not the one.
  10. Price Ain’t Always Right: Don’t be fooled by the price tag, tibe! Quality wood may come with a higher price, but it’s an investment in your DIY journey. Cheap doesn’t always equal profitable.
There you have it! Armed with these 10 tips, you’re now a certified wood whisperer ready to spot quality furniture from a mile away. Embrace the journey, trust your instincts, and let the flipping adventures begin. Remember, your space is your canvas, and with a little wood wisdom, you’re destined to create a flippin’ masterpiece!
